November 3, 2009: Vote NO on Ohio's
Issue 2 | | | |
On
November 3, 2009, Say NO to Big Agribusiness’ Power Grab If you oppose animal abuse, vote NO
on Issue 2 this November. Why is The Humane Society of the United States opposing Issue 2? While designed
to give the appearance of helping farm animals, Issue 2 is little more than a power grab by Ohio’s agribusiness
lobby. The industry-dominated “animal care” council proposed by Issue 2 is really intended to thwart meaningful
improvements in how the millions of farm animals in Ohio are treated on large factory farms. Because it’s designed
to favor large factory farms, not family farmers, Issue 2 is opposed by the Ohio Farmers Union, the Ohio Environmental
Stewardship Alliance, League of Women Voters of Ohio, the Ohio League of Humane Voters, and the Ohio Sierra Club.
The editorial boards of Ohio’s major newspapers—including the Columbus Dispatch, Cleveland Plain Dealer, and Dayton Daily News—all oppose this effort to enshrine the agribusiness lobby’s favored oversight system in
the state’s constitution. Issue 2 is a classic example of bad public policy-making and should be rejected
by voters. Ohio is one of the top veal production states in the nation, with many calves chained by their necks
inside crates so small they can’t even turn around for months on end. As well, the state has 170,000 breeding pigs, many of whom
are confined in two-foot-wide crates barely larger than their bodies for almost their entire lives. And 28 million egg-laying
hens in Ohio are confined in barren, wire battery cages so restrictive the birds can't even spread their wings. This type of extreme confinement is cruel and inhumane, environmentally
damaging, and poses severe public health threats. These problems have prompted six U.S. states—and the entire European Union—to criminalize certain kinds of extreme confinement of farm animals. In
the wake of California’s overwhelming passage of the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act—which banned veal crates, gestation crates and battery cages in California—The Humane Society of the United
States sought to engage in cooperative dialogue with the agribusiness community in Ohio. We hoped to be able to continue that
dialogue and work cooperatively with the state’s farming leaders—both large and small—to collaboratively
advance animal welfare statewide. But rather than discussing potential solutions to these problems, the Ohio Farm Bureau is
now trying to hastily grab more power than it already has. The lobby group persuaded the legislature to refer a measure to
the November 2009 ballot that would enshrine in the state’s constitution an industry-dominated council to “oversee”
the treatment of farm animals. Unfortunately, this council is likely to do little to advance farm animal welfare. It
is little more than a handout to Big Agribusiness interests in the state, seeking to codify the abusive practices currently
being used in the state constitution. Don’t let Big Ag get away with this power grab: Vote NO on Issue
2.

PASS THESE LAWS IN OHIO!
Lawmakers crack down on ’puppy mills’ Monday, June 4, 2007
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Bob Baker has seen the worst of the worst in
his 27 years as an animal cruelty investigator.
There was the Missouri breeder who would skimp on food by skinning
dead dogs and feeding them to other dogs in his kennel. There was the South Dakota breeder who used a handsaw to amputate
the leg of a pregnant Rottweiler, injured in an attack by another dog, in hopes that the Rottweiler would survive long enough
to give birth to another litter.
Baker says such cases are the exception, but adds that mistreatment of dogs in large-scale
breeding operations remains common and troubling.
“Most breeders learn how to keep their standards just above
violating cruelty statutes, but the conditions are still unacceptable,” said Baker, a St. Louis-based national investigator
for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “It’s difficult dealing with these people.
We file charges on the most egregious ones.”
State legislators across the nation are attempting to crack down
on rogue breeding operations and pet sellers.
The week after the May 16 rescue of 173 dogs from the property of a
Dawson County man, the Nebraska Legislature passed a law that increased the number of state kennel inspectors from one to
four and requires new operations to be inspected before opening.
Puppy lemon laws, which let buyers get their money
back if health or genetic defects are discovered within a set time, are on the books in 16 states and were introduced in four
others this year.
California lawmakers are studying a bill that would require cats and dogs over 4 months old to be
spayed or neutered, unless the person caring for them obtains a breeding license.
Laws that would tighten the regulation
of retail pet shops are pending in Oregon, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and bills establishing standards for breeding operations
were introduced in Minnesota and Ohio.
Mass breeding has been a hot-button issue for decades with animal welfare activists,
who use the term “puppy mills” to describe the most unsavory of operations, which are usually situated in rural
areas.
The Humane Society of the United States has long identified Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas,
Ohio and Pennsylvania as the major puppy-mill states, said outreach director Stephanie Shain.
Of the 7 million to
9 million dogs brought into U.S. families each year, Shain said, an estimated 2 million to 4 million are products of puppy
mills.
The demand for popular breeds, and the high prices people are willing to pay, keep breeding operations churning,
Shain said. A quick Internet search showed many puppies with four-figure sale prices, and some breeds, including bulldogs
and Belgian Malinois, with top prices exceeding $3,000.
Many dog breeders chafe at the term “puppy mill,”
saying it is inflammatory and lumps conscientious commercial dog breeders together with the unscrupulous.
Clem Disterhaupt,
president of the Nebraska Dog Breeders Association, said most commercial breeders have the animals’ best interest at
heart.
“We don’t associate ourselves with puppy mills, but sometimes people are under the impression that
if you have a lot of dogs, you must be a puppy mill,” Disterhaupt said.
Disterhaupt said reputable breeders
are licensed with state or federal agencies and provide adequate space, cleanliness, heat and air conditioning and ventilation.
“That’s not a puppy mill,” he said. “People need to distinguish the difference.”
Daisy
Okas, assistant vice president of communications for the American Kennel Club, said breeders, kennel operators and pet stores
register all types of breeds with her organization. The AKC has 15 inspectors who visit about 5,000 places a year where significant
numbers of dogs are registered.
Shain, however, said people who want a puppy should avoid pet stores and instead buy
from a hobby breeder or adopt from a shelter.
Puppy mills, Shain said, damage dogs emotionally and physically because
the animals are confined in tight, unsanitary quarters with little or no socialization with humans or veterinary care. Females
are bred repeatedly, some when they’re as young as 6 months.
The overbreeding, combined with the dismal environment,
results in sickly puppies that have genetic defects and temperament problems, she said. The dogs are sold in pet stores or
on the Internet to unsuspecting buyers.
Investigators such as Baker inspect breeding operations after receiving complaints.
Breeders usually cooperate, but when they don’t, he said, he gathers information by interviewing neighbors and observing
the facility from afar.
Baker, who said he has visited more than 750 breeding facilities since 1980, said that when
he finds evidence of animal cruelty, he notifies local law enforcement.
“Most abuse we see is neglect,”
Baker said. “They know some of the stuff they’re doing is wrong, and they’re embarrassed. They apologize
a lot of times when we come see them. But they’re blinded by the greed and money they’re making off of this.
“Some
start out with the right intentions. They breed a few and make money, so they get more dogs but don’t put money back
in. They get swamped.
Until you have held a tiny
puppy in your arms as it kissed your face with slobbery puppy breath and felt the love, Until you have held an injured
or severely ill dog in your arms and felt their pain and until you have looked into the eyes of a tired aging senior dog
and felt their wisdom, You will never understand the life of a rescuer. We find beauty in
the most incomprehensible places and the otherwise homely faces. It is our gift to see beyond the dirt, terror, sadness
and defeat and find the true soul that lies within. We are Rescue.

It is the ARF crede that animals deserve to live
according to their own natures, free from harm, abuse, and exploitation. This goes further than just saying that we should
treat animals well while we exploit them, or before we kill and eat them. It says animals have the RIGHT to be free from human
cruelty and exploitation, just as humans possess this right.

Sammi the Welsh Corgi Finds a Home!
Beautiful, 2y/o has a Forever, Loving home!
Sammy is a wonderful, purbred Pembroke Welsh Corgi. She was a champion show dog. However, she has lived her
life in a crate. We rescued her from a breeder that did not need her-since she could no longer be bred and was spayed. She
was living a very lonely, dark life. Since we rescued her, we have had her spayed, fully checked by the vet, she is totally
housetrained and has been fully obedience trained. She is VERRRRY loving and loves to kiss. Her face brightens up into a smile
when she is shown love in return. Beautiful Sammy needs lots of TLC. She is now the center of attention. Thank
you to her new forever family.

Kai-Kai 1 y/o Boston terrier mix
Rescued one hour before death Now has found a loving home!
Kai
-Kai (named after the little black & white dog in book "The Dog Who Forgot to Bark",) is striking, beautiful
and mystical. She is an affectionate, beautiful 8 lb. Boston Terrier/Chihuahua mix. She was taken from an abusive home
and sent to a shelter. She had one hour to live, when ARF rescued her. She is so special. A big kisser. A special lap
dog! Very smart and playful. She is very playful-so we think that she would be good with older children (not under 5).
She likes other dogs. She is loving and very appreciative of affection. She is about 1 1/2 years old. ARF had her fully vet
checked and has all her shots. Very healthy. Kai Kai now has a mommy named Maria who has given her a forever, loving
home! ARF was told about Kai-Kai, and even though
we are stretched thin, we could not let her be killed. She is a sweetheart, and verrrrry smart. She loves everyone. And
now ARF has found her the loving home she deserves.

THERE ARE NON-LETHAL SOLUTIONS!
There are non lethal solutions to controlling the deer population. First and Foremost- Deer contraception is being legalized
and APPROVED by the FDA this coming year. Gona Con the new vaccine works for up to 4 years. The ODNR & ODOW are blocking
it for political reasons. Local suburbs can use deer immunocontraception to control the population. They attended
ARF's seminar where the world's leading scientists showed how it works (the DVD or VHS of the seminar is now available!).
There is no excuse for another holocaust of the deer, USE NON-LETHAL METHODS.
Please contact our new Gov. Strickland or Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher- tell them to reorganize the ODNRY & ODOW To

News Release: RESCUE OF CATS IN EASTLAKE,OH.
CEI HIRES PEST CONTROL
TO KILL KITTENS
Eastlake, Ohio- CEI has hired General Pest Control (216-252-7140) to kill approximately
21 kittens and 20 adult cats who lives on or near their property on Erie Street in Eastlake, Oh. Local resident Shirley Adamczewski
of Eastlake, along with other residents have been feeding
the baby kittens along with the other cats for a few months. She has talked to General Pest Control and they have told her
they are trapping and killing the cats.
Animal Rights Foundation (ARF), a local animal rescue organization in northeast Ohio, has offered to relocate the cats to foster homes, however, they
have not been offered any response. The cats that are in this area have live there when their original owners have abandoned
their pets and dumped them in this area. They are domestic cats. Mrs. Adamczewski was threatened with arrest in her attempts
to rescue and feed the kittens. “I have talked to both the Mayor and Police Chief who have have not offered any solutions,”
said Mrs. Adamczewski, “ These are not feral cats. They come up to you and crave the attention.” Calls to CEI
by ARF, Mrs. Adamczewski, and other concerned citizens have not been returned.
“We seek only to rescue these abandoned kitties and cats and relocate them to forever,
loving homes,” said Sandy Lertzman, Executive Director of ARF, “These cats have had enough tragedy being abandoned.
We need to spay and neuter these cats and place them in loving homes.”-
Post Note:After alerting the media
through ARF, CEI has changed its policy, there is cooperation from the community and the cats are finding foster homes through
a sister organization. For more information on adopting these cats, please call or write us at ARF.
